Re-homing a Dog
Old North Canine Rescue does not routinely rehome owned pets. We pull dogs from shelters, focusing mostly on the small, rural, under-funded shelters where the need is usually greatest.
If you must re-home your pet, consider contacting breed-specific rescues (can usually be found on Facebook or searching online), local rescue organizations, and animal shelters. Remember to provide good pictures, age, weight, medical/vaccination history, general temperament and behavior information when reaching out for assistance.

To increase the chances of finding a home and the success of the new placement, it is important that the pet is:
- Vaccinated
- Spayed or neutered (ONCR can help you get this done for low cost or free)
- In good health
- Clean and groomed
- Reasonably well behaved, especially housebroken
Placement advice
- Screening of applicants is very important! We ask that you NEVER just give away your pet. There are many who will use them for bait dogs (yes, dog fighting is very common around here), breeding dogs or simply won't take proper care of them. Even a small rehoming fee with a solid application and home visit can make a difference.
- A home visit is a great way to see how your pet will live. Is there home safe? Is there room for the pet? How are their current pets treated? How do they behave? Will they all get along?
- An adoption contract also allows you to stay in contact, and can help ensure they will care for your dog as you would like (inside dog, not tethered, kept vaccinated, etc...).
